The National Capital Public Relations Hall of Fame was launched Oct. 1, 1999 in conjunction with the National Capital Chapter's 50th Anniversary celebration. At that time, 50 distinguished industry leaders were honored for their outstanding contributions to the public relations profession and their community and set the stage for choosing future inductees. Every year thereafter, additional individuals joined this elite professional body after being nominated and selected by a committee comprised of members of the Hall of Fame. Criteria for admission into the Hall of Fame includes significant accomplishments in the field of public relations, as well as significant contributions to the community, at least 20 years in the profession, with 10 of those years being in the Washington area. Among this extraordinary group are civil rights leaders, White House and Capitol Hill press secretaries, Pentagon spokespersons, business leaders, government officials, international experts, social activists, labor leaders, professors and educators, attorneys, authors and speakers. Collectively, they have more than 2,000 years of professional experience working for and counseling virtually every federal agency in Washington, more than half of the Fortune 500, scores of trade associations and nonprofits, nearly half of the countries in the United Nations, dozens of institutions of higher learning and hundreds of businesses throughout the nation. They share more than a thousand awards, distinctions, honorary degrees, advisory positions, charitable board seats and Who’s Who citations. These members of the Hall of Fame are our role models in large part because of their professional accomplishments, but also because of the way they have conducted their lives and given back to the community who honors them, as well as the community in which they live.
