Code of Ethics

WELCOME TO PRSA-NCC ETHICS RESOURCE PAGE

"At a time when business in every sector and industry are held more publicly accountable for ethical practice, we view the PRSA Code of Ethics and the PRSA-NCC Ethics Resource page as important models for our members as well as other professional communicators. We are especially grateful for the contributions by some off our industry’s most esteemed experts to our new Ethics Resource Page.”

Barbara Burfeind, APR, 2009 PRSA-NCC President

Ethical standards in communication continue to be challenged by the diverse and rapidly evolving situations that confront businesses today. As the global 24/7 news cycles raise the bar for media content on demand, attempts to keep pace can pressure even the most experienced communicators.

Further, ethical errors by novice spokespersons or those not bound by a professional code of ethics may negatively or indirectly impact the public standing of the PR profession. The PRSA National Capital Chapter (PRSA-NCC) Ethics Committee developed this online Ethics Resource page to preserve the highest standards of accuracy and truth in public relations and its role as the conscience of an organization.  Gwyn Walcoff, APR
Chair, PRSA-NCC Ethics Committee

- Hot Topic: Dual Loyalty. "Loyalty is a much-revered value in most, if not all, cultures but remaining loyal to more than one entity is not easy. Ethics often deals with potential conflicting loyalties." How do you manage a conflict of loyalty situation? Here are a few tips from Emmanuel Tchividjian that can help.

1. Identify or recognize the conflicting loyalties

2. List your values, those that define you. Decide who you are or want to be.

3. Determine the boundaries, what your loyalties will allow and prohibit. What you are ready to do and what you will refuse to do. You may decide, for instance, that you will not lie to either party or that you will not report information from one party to the other.

4. Seek counsel before making a decision or taking action.

As the Israeli novelist Amos Oz once said: A conflict begins and ends in the hearts and minds of people, not in the hilltops." Emmanuel Tchividjian."  Read more at http://www.ruderfinn.com/blogs/ethics/

Ethical practice is the most important obligation of a PRSA member. The Member Code of Ethics, as well as the PRSA Member Statement of Professional Values, represents the core values of PRSA members and, more broadly, of the public relations profession.

These values provide the foundation for the Member Code of Ethics and set the industry standard for the professional practice of public relations. These values are the fundamental beliefs that guide our behaviors and decision-making process. We believe our professional values are vital to the integrity of the profession as a whole.
