The Role of the Media in the 2008 Election
Beth Frerking, Senior Editor, Politico and Politico.com
Thursday, June 5, 2008
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The 2008 presidential election is one of the most exciting and memorable in years. Not only is there a woman and an African American running for president, we actually have a race (at least for those voting in the Democratic primaries). The 2008 presidential election also is being shaped by the media—McCain’s alleged flirtation, Hillary’s tears and Obama’s pastor are all proving to be fodder for more than just the tabloids. Beth Frerking, senior editor at Politico and Politico.com will discuss The Role of the Media in the 2008 Presidential Election.
Launched in January 2007, Politico focuses on national politics in these areas: 2008 presidential campaign, Congress, and lobbying and advocacy. As a senior editor of Politico and Politico.com, Frerking has more than 25 years of experience as a journalist. She covered the national political conventions from 1984 to 1996. She worked as a national correspondent from 1991 to 2000 at Newhouse News Service in D.C., where she pioneered the children, family and education beat, winning two National Headliners Awards. She also won two fellowships, at the Casey Journalism Center on Children and Families and the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism, both at the University of Maryland. Before joining Newhouse, she was the D.C. bureau chief of The Denver Post, and, earlier, a reporter at the Dallas Times where the paper's air traffic safety series on which she worked -- "How Safe are the Skies?" -- was a finalist in the Pulitzer Public Service category in 1986. Before joining Politico, she served as executive director of the Casey Journalism Center. Frerking earned her bachelor's degree in journalism (with honors) from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was editor of The Daily Texan student newspaper.
