Committee & Section Leadership
Updated April 8, 2008
One of the goals of the National Capital Chapter is to promote the growth of the individual in the practice of public relations. Much of this is done through the chapter's extensive committee structure. Plan to join one of the following committees and contribute to the professionalism of public relations in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. A description of these committees is found below and you may also click here for a list of contact information for the chapter's Leadership and Committee Chairs.

Accreditation/Continuing Education Committee

This committee promotes the professional accreditation process.  The APR Committee encourages members to consider accreditation and advises interested PRSA members on accreditation requirements. The APR committee offers Jump Start preparatory seminars twice each year along with 2 two-hour Review Sessions and two to three Readiness Reviews, depending on candidate interest.   The committee offers candidates mentoring for the Exam and recognition for new APRs. The chapter’s professional accreditation efforts are coordinated through three groups. One group will be responsible for study seminar instruction (Jump Start, Review Sessions),   another group will coordinate Readiness Reviews ,  and the third works with candidates as they prepare for the Exam.

The Committee also consider ways the chapter can promote maintenance and increase the visibility of the APR. Up-to-date information on Universal Accreditation can be found at www.prsa.org.

Co-Chairs:  Brook DeWalt, APR, brook.dewalt@hq.afis.osd.mil
                   Mitch Marovitz, APR, marovitz_mitchell@bah.com

Career Academy
Career academies are an effort to provide high school students nontraditional curriculum that can prepare them for both college and careers.  Studies have found that career academy students do better in high school and are more likely to pursue a college education when compared with other students in the same schools.  PRSA supports the communications function that is part of most career academies in order to ensure that public relations is promoted along with other studies in communication.  The National Capital Chapter is currently looking for a school in the DC area to have a career academy.

Communications Committee (Member e-newsletter, etc.)
In addition to producing the chapter's electronic newsletter and coordinating content on the PRSA-NCC website, this year the Member Communications Committee will conduct an in-depth analysis of current member communications practices and processes, and develop a comprehensive member communications strategy to drive the chapter's business results.  Volunteers interested in contributing articles or photos to either the newsletter or the website, or participating in the communication audit and development of the communications strategy, should contact Susan Rink (committee chair), Jennifer Strom (newsletter editor).

Chair:  Susan Rink, rinkcomms@verizon.net
Newsletter Editor:  Jennifer Strohm, mailto:jstrohm@vepublicrelations.com

District Liaison

Diversity
The National Capital Chapter's (NCC) Diversity Committee is dedicated to promoting and preserving ethnic and cultural diversity within the Public Relations Society of America and the practice of public relations, itself. Our work fosters the philosophy of inclusion and advances the notion that the communications field is infinitely stronger and more effective when it reflects the broad diversity inherent in American life. We are a multicultural society; we must become a multicultural profession and a multicultural professional association.

Co-Chairs:  LaVerne Gordon, laverne.gordon@montgomerycollege.edu
                   Leonie Campbell-Williams, lcampbell@advancingequality.org

Ethics & Advocacy

The ethics counsel participates in board meetings and ensures that relevant ethical factors and/or perspectives inherent in the topic of discussion are brought forth and considered, provides advice as requested or if it is warranted, and recommends strategies and tactics to support the chapter's objectives pertaining to ethics.  The committee maintains environmental scanning for ethics-related issues in the media that may impact PRSA-NCC, its membership, or the profession at large. Committee members also make recommendations on tactical measures to mitigate negative issues and may take action to respond to such issues, with approval of the chapter board, in a timely manner.
