Top Washington PR Professionals Honored at 39th Annual Thoth Awards
Annual Gala Celebrates the Accomplishments of Communications and Recognizes the Symbiotic Relationship Between Public Relations and Journalism

Washington, D.C., September 20, 2007 – Talent, creativity and innovation in Washington public relations were recognized by the National Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) tonight at its annual Thoth Awards at the National Press Club. From 135 entries in 35 categories, 23 Thoth Awards and 18 Certificates of Excellence were presented to representatives of public relations agencies, corporations, government agencies and trade and professional associations.  The Thoth Awards (pronounced "Tot") are named for the Egyptian god of information and communication.

This year’s theme was “Connect With Us” and recognized the symbiotic relationship that exists between the worlds of public relations and journalism, especially in Washington, DC.  Featured at this year’s event was emcee Kathleen Matthews, award-winning producer, reporter, and news anchor, who currently serves as Vice President of Global Communications and Public Affairs at Marriott International

Joining Kathleen were special guests from print, broadcast and online media, including Mark Hamrick from Associated Press Radio; Jonathan Aiken formerly with CNN, Sandra Thomas formerly with NBC; Phil Rabin and Paul Duning from the DC Communicator; Patrick Gavin from FishBowl DC and The Examiner; Barbara Martinez from the Politico; Ted McKenna from PR Week; and Mike Mills from Washington Business Journal.

Among the top honors awarded were:

The “Best of Show” award for public relations excellence and one Thoth Award were presented to DDB Issues & Advocacy and its client, HopeLab for the first video game scientifically shown to improve health-related outcomes for young people with cancer, an audience that is at greatest risk for adverse cancer outcomes.  DDB Issues & Advocacy was charged with launching Re-Mission, while influencing a newly emerging media awareness of games that can improve health. The entry presented the greatest challenge with the most significant outcomes in the opinion of the Thoth judges.

“Thoth is the chapter’s signature event and celebrates innovation within the public relations industry and showcases the Washington area’s talent,” said Sandra Wills Hannon, president of the PRSA National Capital Chapter and president, and principal and owner of The Hannon Group, LLC. “We congratulate the Thoth awardees and thank all those who submitted entries for the competition.  We also extend our appreciation to the Thoth judges and the Thoth committee for their efforts in helping to ensure a successful Thoth program.”

The agency picking up the most awards this year was Ketchum Public Relations with two Thoth awards and four Certificates of Excellence.  Crosby Communications received the second largest number of awards with two Thoths and two Certificates each.  The recipient of the third largest number of awards was Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide with two Thoths and one Certificate.
