Comments from 2009 attendees:

“It was by far the most interesting and useful workshop that I have been to. Don is a great teacher.”   Freelance Environmental Writer

Don Bates brings prudent yet fresh insights to the profession, the practice and the joys of PR. You will come away from his workshop smarter and braver. Assistant Account Executive, GolinHarris

I especially enjoyed the section on pitching to the media and writing pitch letters because it allowed me to change for the better the way I approach media with my agency's news stories.  Public Affairs Specialist, Defense Logistics Agency

Since this event I have utilized the template pitch -- created by Prof. Bates -- resulting in a substantial increase in call backs and story placements. Our PR team uses this template as a blueprint for developing additional PR materials. Health Communications and Marketing Specialist, AED Center for Health Communication

Take Home A Treasure-Trove of Tried and True Tactics

If you want to write better for PR purposes and learn first-hand how to do exactly that, this workshop is for you.  Through presentation, exercises and discussion, you will learn the "best principles and practices” of powerful PR writing, online and off.  You will also learn how to focus your time, attention and creativity so you can write more quickly and productively.  And you will take home a packet of collected how-to guidelines.

In addition, you will gain valuable insights about how to empower your public relations writing by following Don’s research findings and expert knowledge.

To make the workshop as practical as possible, you will focus on news releases and “pitch” letters, and you will receive generic feedback on what you and others have submitted for selected in-class analysis (instructions will be sent from PRSA-NCC in a separate communication).  And you will learn how to:

• Give yourself room and time to be good.
• Handle critics and temptations that get in your way.

Last but not least, you will learn how to write for social media such as Facebook and Twitter with special emphasis on essentials such as tone, transparency and willingly engaging in two-way conversation.

Time permitting, other PR writing formats will be discussed.
