The CDC and Hager Sharp Win Best of Show at 49th Annual Thoth Gala

Marsans, Seng Inducted into National Capital Public Relations Hall of Fame
October 13, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Oct. 13, 2017 – Last night, more than 180 industry professionals attended the National Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America‘s 49th annual Thoth Awards Gala at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The event honored the industry’s top programs, products and campaigns in the nation’s capital region.

The CDC and Hager Sharp received the Thoth Best of Show award for their HPV Vaccine is Cancer Prevention campaign. The campaign increased the quality of clinicians’ HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination recommendation for children 11–12 to ultimately increase vaccine uptake. The HPV vaccine can prevent more than 90 percent of HPV-related cancers from ever developing. The campaign utilized research, message and materials development, partnerships, paid media and evaluation to generate exposure across targeted channels and increase recommendation quality.

“To be in a room filled with the best and brightest public relations professionals in the Washington, D.C. area is an honor and privilege, and the awards showcase the great work our community does in furthering our profession,” said Sabrina Kidwai, APR, CAE, president of PRSA-NCC. “On behalf of the National Capital Chapter of PRSA, congratulations to all of our award winners, National Capital Hall of Fame honorees, and everyone who submitted entries this year. We appreciate the support of all of our sponsors, attendees, and partner organizations who made our Gala possible.”

PRSA-NCC presented 52 Thoth Awards and Awards of Excellence. An experienced panel of Thoth Awards judges selected the finalists. They reviewed numerous entries from a wide range of public relations firms, government agencies, nonprofit and corporate organizations located in the Washington, D.C. area.

Carmen Marsans and John J. Seng were inducted into the National Capital Public Relations Hall of Fame. Marsans is currently the senior vice president of client services for Comunicad where she directs and oversees national programs for corporate clients and special projects with international organizations. Seng founded Spectrum Science Communications in 1996. The company was awarded Healthcare Agency of the Year (Holmes Report), Top Place to Work in PR (PR News) and Best Place to Work (PRWeek) in 2016.

“Anyone associated with our business owes a debt of gratitude for the outstanding contributions made by this year’s National Capital Public Relations Hall of Fame honorees,” said Samantha Villegas, APR, chair of the Hall of Fame Awards and 2013 PRSA-NCC president. “Carmen and John are champions in our business and have made a tremendous impact on behalf of the clients they served and with the professionals they worked with. By saying ‘they’ve worked tirelessly on behalf of the PR community’ would be an understatement. These two outstanding professionals represent the best in the field of public relations.”

The PRSA-NCC awards are named after Thoth (pronounced “tot”), an Egyptian god of wisdom who was a mediator and scribe and credited as the inventor of communications and writing. In the spirit of Thoth, PRSA-NCC honors area PR professionals for their wisdom and contributions to the profession.
