The Public Affairs and Communications Division of the Office of the County Administrator is seeking a professional communicator to serve as a member of the County’s communications and public engagement team. We are seeking qualified candidates for a Communications Specialist. We are looking for candidates with passion for engaging the public through strategic communication activities. An interest or experience in the areas of transportation/transit is desired. The Communications Specialist will support the Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure. The Communications Specialist will create content and perform other communication-related activities in support of the department’s overall communications goals and objectives. These activities include media relations; public information campaigns; event and community meeting planning; photography; employee communications; and marketing. The Communications Specialist will also produce and publish content for the departments’ social media accounts and webpages. The ideal candidate is adept in the use of graphic design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva, to create digital content and print collateral, such as infographics, flyers, brochures, and reports.
The successful candidates for this position will be self-motivated, organized, and creative, and demonstrate an ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who have expertise in public affairs, public relations, public information, digital communication, community outreach, marketing, journalism, and/or other areas within the field of communications.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in communication, public relations, journalism, public administration, or other related field, and three years of experience in journalism, communication, media relations, public relations, or other related field. Experience performing technical communication tasks, such as copy writing/editing, graphic art/design, and digital communications. Proficiency in the production of content, such as graphics, newsletters, reports, flyers, posters, and/or videos.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience managing social media and using a website Content Management System. Experience creating digital content for a government, non-profit, or communications organization. Knowledge of and/or experience working with transportation and/or transit topics. Proficiency with design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite.
This positions is considered essential personnel and therefore will be required to work on-site during emergencies, including closures of the County government and full activations of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). In addition, this position will require some after-hours work to support routine and emergency meetings and events.
