Dear PRSA-NCC members:
As I started to brainstorm ideas for this month’s column, I considered writing about resolutions, what will be the great disrupter of PR and communications this year, and upcoming programs and events. But, I kept coming back to volunteering and giving back to the profession. As a lifelong learner, I’m always striving to learn new things as well as give back to my community.
Over the holiday break, I toured the National Museum of African American History and Culture. For three and half hours, I absorbed new information, explored a range of emotions, and watched how parents explained tough issues to their children. It was clear and concise and two elements of the seven C’s. If you haven’t gone yet, I strongly encourage you to go! It was accessible for everyone and incorporated different senses with video and interactive exhibits.
From a volunteer standpoint, whenever I attend an event or conference, I always look for people who are giving back and helping others. When I worked with the 2014 International Conference for PRSA, we helped manage volunteer, developing communication pieces for before and after, and plan the Opening Night Gala.
Volunteers for PRSA-NCC are working hard to develop content and resources to enhance your skills and knowledge. We are always looking for volunteers to give back, and I hope you will join in as a volunteer in 2018!
One of the biggest rewards and benefits of volunteering is you are developing a cohort of people that will help you with new ideas, advice, and be another support system when you need it. Some of the best ideas have been ignited through conversations before and after events.
Instead of having the membership rally this year, we are trying some new things to recruit members and volunteers. We are going to create multiple opportunities throughout the year to engage with the chapter. Your involvement is vital to the chapter’s success.
We have 17 different committees that cover a variety of industries in PR, membership, and communication. Here’s a link to all the committees: www.prsa-ncc.org/committees-sections.
If you would like to volunteer, please reach out to the committee chairs. We would love for you to give back to the profession this year!
