PRSA-NCC Debuts New Professionals Committee

The National Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA-NCC) is pleased to debut the New Professionals Committee. This group helps new communications professionals meet, interact and learn from one another through professional development workshops, networking happy hours and behind-the-scenes seminars.

In line with the national New Professionals Section, PRSA-NCC’s newest committee hosts events catered to the new professional. A “new” professional is anyone with around seven or fewer years in the industry. This includes anyone from recent college graduates, to people who have been in the workforce for a few years, to those who have been in the workforce for 20 years, but are new in PR. At the same time, committee events are a place where new, mid and senior level professionals can converge to network and share ideas.

Co-chairs Katelynn Wiggins with the American Psychological Association and Kelsey Pospisil with News Generation are excited about working with fellow new pros to build events that are tailored to what people at this stage in their careers are most eager to experience.

“It’s a great opportunity to be able to work closely with my colleagues at other organizations who experience a lot of the same questions that I myself have,” Pospisil says. “It’s a neat opportunity to be able to make connections, and even friendships, that are beneficial to both our personal and professional growth.”

PRSA-NCC chapter president Mitch Marovitz adds, “The reason behind changing the focus of the old PRONet committee and reintroducing and re-branding it as the New Professionals Committee is to recognize the fact that the profession is experiencing growth not only from increased numbers of new college graduates entering the workforce but also from increased numbers of junior- and mid-careerists, and even senior careerists, entering the profession from other areas.”

Marovitz continues, “It is absolutely vital that we provide a platform for our members who are new to the practice to network with each other and with other PR professionals and to develop programs that meet the needs of people new to the profession across a range of work experiences. By networking, they will create relationships that will last them throughout their careers and by developing programs designed for them we will help them gain important skills, knowledge and abilities that will further and enrich their careers.”

Visit the committee page or contact the co-chairs, Kelsey and Katelynn, to learn more and get involved.

PR Agency Heads Meet At Annual Leadership Program

Approximately 40 people, including many senior-level communicators, joined to honor Bill Oliver, former senior vice president of public affairs at AT&T, and his recent induction into the National Capital Chapter Hall of Fame. The program was hosted by PRSA-NCC and DCI Group at the Westin Georgetown.

In his remarks, Oliver said that communicators must adopt an analytical, rather than intuitive, approach as a fundamental way of doing business. He said “big data” eats everything in its path. In short, he said “don’t wing it.”

Attendees at the event, held on Oct. 23, included Kris Balderston, general manager of FleishmanHillard’s D.C. office; Larry Rosenfeld, CEO of Sage Communications; Marc Hausman, president/CEO of Strategic Communications Group; and Lynne Doner Lotenberg, Hager Sharp's interim president, and Debra Silimeo, the firm's executive vice president.  The event also had representatives from some of the area's other large PR firms and was the fourth annual event created exclusively for senior-level agency professionals. For attendees, the evening event was a chance to mix-and-mingle in a social setting.

This story originally appeared in the Capitol Communicator and was included in its weekly update distributed to thousands of communicators in the mid-Atlantic. It can be found here.

The Vs and Ps of Crisis Communications

September’s PRSA-NCC Professional Development workshop, “Social Media’s Impact on Crisis Communications,” was particularly timely and poignant. Held the day after the tragic shooting at the Navy Yard — at the chapter’s regular meeting venue, the U.S. Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania  Avenue — the workshop began with a moment of silence for the victims and their families.

A complete listing of all the 2013 Thoth Award winners can be found here.

Washington, D.C. — The Public Relations Society of America - National Capital Chapter (PRSA-NCC) recognized and honored the outstanding public relations campaigns and initiatives produced by Washington D.C. area industry professionals at its 45thannual Thoth Awards Gala held on September 18th at the Pavilion Room of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

The gala attracted nearly 200 people this year. It began with the induction of Judy Phair and Bill Oliver into the National Capital Public Relations Hall of Fame. Phair, a former president of PRSA National is also president of her own agency, PhairAdvantage Communications, LLC. Oliver, former Senior Vice President of Communications for AT&T, is currently operating a private consultancy, Bill Oliver Public Affairs. Bill Novelli, a member of the Hall of Fame and one of the original founders of Porter Novelli, introduced the inductees during this ceremony. Criteria for induction in the National Capital Public Relations Hall of Fame includes 30 or more years of distinguished accomplishments, visionary leadership, mentoring, commitment to the profession, positive and significant impacts on the industry, and contributions to the community. Inductees are nominated by their peers and must have worked in the Washington, D.C. area for at least ten years.

"On behalf of the Chapter, I would like to congratulate tonight's winners of Thoth Awards, Certificates of Excellence, and PRR, Inc. for their Best of Show victory," said PRSA-NCC President Samantha Villegas. PRSA-NCC then distributed 38 Thoth Awards and Certificates of Excellence to winners last night. The Thoth Awards “Best InShow” award was presented to PRR, Inc. for the “Maryland Oral Health Social Marketing Initiative: Healthy Teeth, Healthy Kids.”

"We are excited to accept the 2013 Thoth Best in Show Award," said John Welby, Director of Oral Health Literacy, Maryland Office of Oral Health. "This award helps shed light on the often and forgotten importance of oral health for children not just in the state of Maryland, but throughout the nation."

An experienced panel of Thoth Awards judges selected the finalists by reviewing numerous entries from a wide-range of public relations, non-profit, and corporate organizations located in the Washington, D.C. area.

The following individuals and organizations won Thoth Awards and Certificates of Excellence in these entry categories. A comprehensive list can also be found on the PRSA-NCC website at https://www.prsa-ncc.org/2013-thoth-winning-entries.

Content Marketing – What Every PR Professional Needs to Know

Publish or perish. In the new world of online communities and web marketing, this classic adage is not just for academics anymore, but for virtually all marketers and PR professionals. This month’s PRSA-NCC professional development breakfast panel focused on the growing trend of content marketing and how communicators can use interactive online platforms like blogging, Facebook and Twitter to tell their organization’s story.
